Well, it seems I'm becoming a bit of a reviewer. Not a good one, but, this will do for now. The title states the game I'm commenting on, and, if you haven't an idea of what it is, then let me break it down for you. Chaos Legion is a Hack and Slash Action game made by Capcom. It's based on a Book series in Japan, that was never, and probably WILL never be brought over here. This Playstation 2 title was greatly overshadowed by it's big brother series Devil May Cry, and, let's get this out of the way right away. Chaos Legion and DMC are different, but, based on a similar core.
I believe Capcom did a very big disservice to Chaos Legion by comparing it to DMC at all. On the back of the box there's a little blurb stating "If you love DMC then you'll love Chaos Legion." from PSM Magazine, this was a bad way to package this game, as the gameplay is more like Drakengard then DMC, but the level system is where the depth of the game comes from. I'm getting ahead of myself though.
The story of Chaos Legion is one that's easy to get lost in. Not in a good way either. You play as Seig, you have been sent to stop a former friend of you who is bent on the destruction of the Church, who sent you, and the world. There's much more, but, as I stated it's based on a book, and, we are joining the chapter in progress. This makes the game hard to enjoy for some, and amazing for others. Personally, I enjoy the story, but, it is jarring to be thrown into the center of the story in progress with nothing but my own wits.
The gameplay is solid. Square is your main attack, cross is jump, triangle is a force attack based on the crest equipped, circle is lock on, R1 is swap between passive and active, L1 is summon legion, R2 and L2 cycle your legions and start is menu. All of this feels good to use. You're limited at first. 4 hit max combo and not much in the way of mobility or dodge potential. You get more stuff by equipping and leveling legion crests.
This is the meat of the game, leveling your legions require experience points, gained through dispatching enemies and carefully countering or having legions kill those enemies for 2 to 4 times the exp. Some of these take Millions of exp, and, through this you can gain permanent abilities for Seig this way. All in all it feels good to progress, though, there are certain crests you will probably use less then others. you'll find your own favorites quickly. Though to get the ultimate crest you will have to work and wait until VERY late game.
This is not a game for completionists. I will definitely say give it a look if you can find it though, It's a very fun game.
